In this part of our Catechism Series with Pr. Joe Abrahamson, we discuss the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. According to the Bible, what is Baptism and what does it actually deliver? Why do some Christians actually make Baptism a work of us humans rather than God’s work of saving us? What is the role of faith in the Sacrament of Holy Baptism?
Pr. Timothy Winterstein sees Luther’s teaching of “the hidden God” on full display in the television show Fargo. For the producers and characters of Fargo, if God does exist, He must certainly have no good will for human beings. All things must be a matter of fate. However, God’s revelation of Himself in the cross of Jesus Christ gives us a different picture of God. In Christ, God has indeed entered this fallen world plagued by evil in order to redeem and restore it.

In this installment of our Catechism Series with Pr. Joe Abrahamson, we discuss how God wants us to receive His grace, mercy, and forgiveness in the Sacraments. What are Sacraments? What do they actually give to us? Pr. Abrahamson outlines the differences between the Lutheran view of the Sacraments on the one hand, and the Roman Catholic and Reformed views on the other hand. The last two might more alike that you think!
What is the most neglected part of the Small Catechism? According to Pr. Jordan McKinley, it’s not what you might think. He draws our attention to the repeated – and neglected – parts that say, “As the head of the family should teach….” Pr. McKinley also gives practical tips for how parents can teach the Catechism at home, especially in the context of family devotions.

In Part 6 of our Catechism Series with Pr. Joe Abrahamson, we discuss the Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed on the person and work of the Holy Spirit, who brings us to faith in Jesus Christ. Then we discuss the Lord’s Prayer, why it is that only Christians can truly pray, and some fascinating connections between the structure of the Lord’s Prayer and God’s original creation.
First, “Throwdown” hosts Eric Andersen and Randy Asburry answer a listener’s question via Facebook. She asks, “How would you tell someone who has never read the Book of Concord to study and read it? Do we begin on page one? How does one study it?”
Then, Joseph Klotz joins us to discuss his article, “The Destruction of Marriage.” What’s at stake in the fight for same-sex marriage? Is the homosexual agenda really based on the disillusionment of marriage as an institution? Are straight people really the ones destroying marriage just fine by themselves? What role has the “sexual revolution” played in the dissolution of marriage?
